I have started work on a writing bureau. Although in very good order, the bureau’s wood stain made it look rather dated, so a nice new look was in order. First job was to remove the handles – except most of them were glued as well as screwed, so they had to stay in-situ for the sanding and wash down. Here it is, on blocks, ready for priming, looking just like a Dalek with its wooden stays sticking out.
Today saw the first coat of paint, which is Designers Guild ‘Duck Egg’. I recently painted an oak bureau in the same colour and thought it looked very pretty, so decided to do this one in a similar theme. I’m planning on adding some off white to the panels and may tone down the gold handles with a flash of white too.
The bureau is all but finished. Apologies for the dim light in the photo, but it was falling dusk when I snapped the pic. As you can see, the main body of the bureau is the Designers Guild ‘Duck Egg’, with the panels painted in Annie Sloan’s ‘Old White’. I also gave the gold handles a flash of Old White to marry them in with the rest of the bureau, but I left glimpses of the gold showing through for a faux aged look.
The paper rest has been lined with some pretty Romo fabric, which is Duck Egg Blue with Off White blossom.
